Tanzania Vacation Package: 10 Nights at a Steady Pace
The walking is short and the sitting is long. What this trip asks of you is early mornings and hours on rough tracks, not fitness.
What the days ask of you
This trip is filed as steady. Everything below is measured, not adjectives.
- Walking on an average day
- under a mile most days. Walking in the parks is restricted and that is not our rule
- Longest stretch without a seat
- thirty minutes, on the one walking safari with an armed ranger
- What is under your feet
- camp paths at night, uneven, unlit, and you are given a torch for a reason
- Climbing
- none
- Altitude
- three thousand to six thousand feet, which some people feel at the crater rim
- Heat
- warm days and genuinely cold mornings in the open vehicle
- Times you move
- four, and the driving between them is long and rough
- Who this is not for
- if sitting for five hours on a corrugated track is hard on your back, say so now
What is included
- Ten nights across four camps and lodges, all with private facilities and running water
- All meals, and drinking water in the vehicle throughout
- A vehicle with a roof hatch and a driver guide for the whole route, maximum six travelers
- All park and conservation fees, which are a large part of what you are paying for
- Internal flight on the last leg rather than a full day back in the vehicle
- Arrival and departure transfers at Kilimanjaro
What is not included
- International flights, quoted separately
- Anything to drink other than water and what comes with meals
- Gratuities for the driver guide and camp staff, which are expected and which we will give you a figure for
- The balloon flight, which is bought separately and which we can hold for you
- Laundry at three of the four camps
- Anything medical, including the antimalarial course you will need to arrange at home
What it costs
from $6,450 per person, on two people sharing.
That is the lowest figure we have actually placed this trip at in the last season. It moves with the month, the room or cabin grade, whether you travel alone and how far ahead you book. Flights are not in it unless this page says they are. The figure is confirmed in writing, with the operator named, before you commit to anything.
When this is worth doing, and when it is not
Late June to October is the dry season and the standard answer. January and February are the calving weeks in the south and a different trip entirely. The long rains in April and May close several camps and we do not sell this route then.
If you are hoping to walk in the parks, this is not that trip. Walking is restricted, and the days are spent in a vehicle on tracks that are rough enough to tire people who were not expecting it.
What gets settled when you confirm
The camps, because at this level the specific camp changes the price more than the season does. Whether you want the balloon morning, which has to be held early. Single supplement if it applies, which on safari is heavier than elsewhere. And your seat preference in the vehicle, which sounds trivial and is not on a ten day route.
